Yuling: A student on a holistic journey to heal her health issues
Introduce yourself & what you do in 2 sentences!
I am 21 & studying Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) at Beijing University of Chinese Medicine. I like whipping up healthy plant-based meals and desserts!
How did you start on your health journey?
I used to struggle with poor immunity, anaemia, digestive issues and period irregularity. With time, I have learnt to listen to my own body, took up functional medicine courses, and sought advice and treatment from TCM.
Knowledge is really power. I hated the feeling of not knowing what was causing my health issues. So with more knowledge from both Eastern medicine and Western nutrition, I then better understand what foods to avoid or what foods to eat more of, and how to heal my gut and improve my immunity!
Being whole food plant-based has helped me cut out more processed foods and reduced inflammation in my body!
how are you feeling right now?
I am in a much better place now than years ago, and I am thankful that all the work done on my health has paid off. Not only do I enjoy a much better quality of life, I am glad that my immunity is serving me well during the pandemic.
"It feels so good to be in control of your own body and to live freely in my only home, our bodies are our only home on this earth."
4 health tips for someone who has no idea where to start
- Avoid using sunflower, canola oil, corn & soybean oil. These oils are high in omega 6 but when we consume too much omega 6, studies have shown it causes inflammation, which is very stressful on our bodies. Olive oil is okay (not for deep frying though). If you are outside, you can always ask the aunty/uncle to “放少油”
- Consume less cold drinks (especially for ladies) and cut down on sugar. For example, for bubble tea you can opt for no ice (Koi even has room temperature option), 25% sugar and less pearls!
- Chew your food. We don’t chew enough and we often end up eating too much. Eating too much is a huge stress on the gut as well. If you experience food coma regularly, it is a sign that your digestive system is working extra hard.
- Learn how to read ingredient lists. If you cannot pronounce a lot of stuff on that list, ditch it. Buy more whole foods instead of pre-packaged food.
"I used to have crazy dizzy spells, random tremors & overall weakness when I had normal cakes and desserts. After having The Clean Addicts cakes, I feel much better & they are really what they claim to be!"
How do you enjoy the clean addicts cakes & what do you like about them?
I always like to reward myself with a The Clean Addicts cake. Whenever I finish my exams, am feeling stressed out, feeling sad, or have accomplished something (my brother had COVID few months back and I was his primary caregiver so after 10 days of taking care of him around the clock, I rewarded myself with 2 whole TCA cakes!)
Andrea's cakes only tastes good, but I also know it is so nourishing and so good for the body! It has fibre, micronutrients, protein and complex carbs, without the other nasties like excessive refined sugar, processed oil, additives etc, zero guilt!
your FAVe CAKE flavour?
I love the Flourless Cacao Fudge Cake the most! I always have it as breakfast. Breakfast is the most important meal of the day, this is when our bodies absorb the most nutrients.
TCA cakes are the only cakes that I have them for breakfast and have a good start to the day. I hope to have The Clean Addicts' cake as my wedding cake next time!! 😊
